Gweru Kombi Inferno DNA Results Delayed, Police Call for Patience
The DNA results of the seven school children killed in the Gweru commuter omnibus inferno which were expected today are now expected on Friday.
Gweru — DNA test results for the seven schoolchildren who died in last week’s devastating commuter omnibus fire in Gweru which were expected today are now expected on Friday, as authorities intensify efforts to positively identify the victims and finalise burial arrangements.
A source familiar with the process said the results, initially anticipated earlier in the week, are now expected on Friday, 19 June 2026.
National Police Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, meanwhile, has urged the public and affected families to remain patient, saying forensic teams are still concluding the identification process.
“It is still too early regarding the DNA results. We ask for patience as we finalise the process,” he said, stressing that the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Forensic Department is working to ensure accurate and conclusive identification before any releases are made.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police Forensic Department is conducting DNA analysis using samples collected from bereaved families and remains recovered from the scene of the tragic accident.
Chief Director of the Civil Protection Unit (CPU), Mr Nathan Nkomo, said earlier that the Government was closely monitoring the process, noting that burial arrangements will only proceed once the victims are positively identified.
Government has pledged to cover all funeral-related expenses for the inferno victims, with Doves Funeral Services expected to coordinate the burials once identification is completed.
The tragedy has prompted a coordinated national response involving Government departments, emergency services and counselling teams.
Authorities said psychosocial support is also being provided to affected families, pupils and teachers as the community continues to grapple with the aftermath of the disaster.
Once the DNA results are released by police forensic authorities, burial dates and arrangements will be announced in consultation with the affected families.
