South African Man Shot Dead in Confrontation Over Water
A 71-year-old man has been arrested in Sundra, near Delmas, following a fatal shooting over a water dispute on February 8, 2026.
Delmas, South Africa - A 71-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder following a deadly confrontation over water access in Mpumalanga Province, police said on Monday.
The incident occurred at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Sunday in Eloff, a small agricultural community near Delmas.
South African Police Service (SAPS) officials said the violence erupted between two residents sharing the same property amid persistent regional water shortages.
Investigators believe the dispute centered on a JoJo water storage tank installed in a garage on the suspect’s side of the premises.
The tank had been provided by the landlord as a backup for when municipal services failed.
Police report that the deceased, a 33-year-old man, attempted to enter the garage to activate a pressure pump and access the stored water.
When the older man allegedly refused him entry, the younger resident forced his way toward the tap.
"The suspect reportedly shot him at close range, striking him in the left eye," a police statement said.
The victim’s wife, who attempted to intervene, told police she was also threatened.
She fled to her side of the house after the suspect allegedly warned he would shoot her as well.
The shooting triggered an immediate and volatile reaction from the local community.
More than 100 residents gathered at the scene, threatening to kill the suspect and set the house on fire.
Police moved quickly to secure the scene and take the elderly man into custody before the situation could escalate further.
The killing comes as South Africa grapples with a deepening water security crisis. Just days prior to the incident, the national government classified drought conditions and water supply disruptions in several provinces as a national disaster.
In rural and peri-urban areas like Sundra, aging infrastructure and municipal debt have left thousands of residents dependent on private storage tanks and boreholes.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Delmas Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, February 10, facing a single charge of murder.
