Teen (17) Arrested for Elderly Couple's Murder
A 17-year-old youth has been arrested following a multi-disciplinary police operation in connection with the brutal double murder of an elderly couple in Makapanstad, North West. The bodies of a 76-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman were discovered at their home on Monday.
North West, South Africa —A 17-year-old youth has been arrested in connection with the brutal double murder of an elderly couple in Makapanstad, North West Province, following a multi-disciplinary police operation.
The minor was apprehended on Tuesday, June 23, barely 24 hours after the bodies of a 76-year-old man and a 62-year-old woman were discovered at their home on Monday, June 22.
Official police reports say a joint tactical team comprising the Brits Crime Intelligence Unit, the Brits Trio Task Team, and Makapanstad Detectives tracked down the suspect after interrogating a person of interest.
During the arrest, Detectives recovered a sum of cash believed to have been stolen from the victims, alongside a knife handle suspected to be the murder weapon.
Both items have been seised as forensic evidence.
The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Tshwane North Magistrate’s Court.
Due to his age, the suspect’s identity remains protected and subsequent legal proceedings will be conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Child Justice Act governing juvenile offenders.
The South African Police Services says investigations into the double homicide remain underway.
