Drone Strike Hits Egyptian Port, Sparks Fears of Wider Middle East Conflict

Cairo, Egypt – A suspected drone strike hit a gas storage tanker at Egypt's Mediterranean port of Damietta, igniting a fire and raising concerns that the ongoing regional conflict could spread to new areas.

LBritish maritime security firm Ambrey, says the drone struck the United States-owned gas storage tanker Energos Winter, triggering a blaze that later spread to the nearby vessel Gaslog Salem.

Emergency crews quickly responded and managed to bring the fire under control.

Egypt's Petroleum Ministry said no injuries were reported among the crews and an investigation into the incident is underway.

The attack comes just days after Iranian state television reportedly identified Damietta as a potential target for retaliation against Ukraine following an attack on an Iranian vessel in the Caspian Sea.

No group has claimed responsibility for the strike, and Egyptian authorities have not identified those behind the attack.

The incident has intensified concerns that the conflict in the Middle East could expand beyond its current frontlines, threatening strategic energy infrastructure and international shipping routes.

Global energy markets reacted to the developments, with Brent crude futures climbing more than 8% to trade above US$90 a barrel as investors weighed the potential impact on regional energy supplies.

Security analysts say the attack highlights the growing vulnerability of key maritime and energy facilities as tensions continue to rise across the region.

Egyptian authorities said investigations are continuing to establish the origin of the drone and the circumstances surrounding the attack.
