Harare - President Emmerson Mnangagwa has reassigned Commissioner Fungayi Jessie Majome from her prominent role as the Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission with immediate effect.

A formal press statement issued on Friday, April 10, the Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Dr. Martin Rushwaya said Majome will now serve as a Commissioner within the Public Service Commission.

Dr. Rushwaya said the reassignment was made in accordance with Section 202 (1)(b) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

Ms. Majome, a seasoned legal practitioner and former Member of Parliament, has led the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission during a particularly active period for the body.

Only days prior to this reassignment, she had been vocal regarding the Constitutional Amendment Number 3 Bill (CAB3) raising concerns over the conduct of public hearings and their impact on citizens' rights to freedom of expression and human dignity.

Her commission also recently marked World Health Day by highlighting progress in the country’s health delivery systems while acknowledging remaining gaps in service delivery.

The Public Service Commission, where Majome will now serve, is the body responsible for the administration and management of Zimbabwe’s civil service.

While the move is framed as a constitutional reassignment, the sudden nature of the transition has drawn attention from political observers, given the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission's recent critical stance on certain legislative processes.

This latest development is part of a series of high-level changes within the Zimbabwean government, coming shortly after the dismissal of the Director-General of the Central Intelligence Organisation.

The administration has not provided additional commentary on the strategic reasoning behind Majome’s transfer, emphasising only the constitutional authority under which the President acted.
