Maria Sibanda’s Quiet Rise in Zimbabwe’s Literary Space
Gweru - Zimbabwe’s literary scene is witnessing the rise of a powerful new voice, Gweru based Maria Sibanda, whose debut poetry collection Visions n Verses has already earned national acclaim.
Crowned Best English Poetry Book at the Dream Discovery Annual Awards in Gweru last December, Sibanda’s work is more than art, it is a testament to resilience, creativity and the transformative power of words.
Born at Loreto Mission Hospital in Silobela and living with a physical challenge, Sibanda has turned silent observation into lyrical expression.
Her journey through Jairos Jiri School, King George VI Memorial School and Loreto Mission School shaped her worldview, sharpening the social awareness that now pulses through her poetry.
Visions n Verses explores love, grief, faith, family, social justice and environmental activism, themes that resonate deeply with readers navigating Zimbabwe’s shifting realities.
“I observe in silence and vent in ink,” Sibanda says, a phrase that perfectly captures her quiet strength and literary craft.
Her voice is steadily gaining ground. Beyond her solo collection, she has contributed to the Shona anthology Nhetsutetsu Dzamanyukira and the forthcoming English anthology The Thinking Mirror.
Her multilingual reading habits, Shona, English and Ndebele, enrich her writing making her work accessible across cultures.
Despite challenges in distribution and visibility, Sibanda’s recognition at the Dream Discovery Publishers awards has cemented her place in Zimbabwe’s literary space.
Each accolade and collaboration affirms her belief that her words matter, that her voice belongs.
Now Sibanda is focused on expanding her reach and ensuring her poetry travels beyond the page.
Her rise is not just personal, it is symbolic of a broader movement where marginalized voices claim space, softly yet unmistakably.
