Zimbabwe Stun Australia With 23-run Upset in T20 World Cup
Zimbabwe makes history again! Blessing Muzarabani’s 4-wicket haul leads Zimbabwe to a 23-run victory over Australia in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026.
Zimbabwe pulled off one of the biggest upsets in ICC Men's T20 World Cup history on Friday, defeating powerhouse Australia by 23 runs in a Group B clash at Colombo's R. Premadasa Stadium, keeping their perfect record against the Australians intact in the tournament.
Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Zimbabwe posted a competitive 169 for two in their 20 overs on a pitch that offered some assistance to seamers early on.
Opener Brian Bennett anchored the innings with an unbeaten 64, providing stability after early contributions from Tadiwanashe Marumani and captain, Sikandar Raza.
Ryan Burl chipped in with a quick cameo, helping Zimbabwe accelerate in the death overs against a disciplined Australian attack, led by Nathan Ellis and Adam Zampa.
Australia's chase started steadily, with opener Matt Renshaw top-scoring with 65 to keep them in contention.
However, the innings unraveled dramatically in the latter stages, as Zimbabwe's bowlers tightened the screws.
Fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani was the 'wrecker-in-chief', claiming a career-best four for 17, including the crucial wicket of Renshaw, which triggered a collapse.
Australia lost their last six wickets for just 40 runs, bowled out for 146 in 19.3 overs.
All-rounder, Brad Evans, supported with three for 23, while a sharp run-out in the final over sealed the victory.
A highlight in the field came from Zimbabwe's Tony Munyonga, who took a stunning catch to dismiss Australia's Ben Dwarshuis, further tilting the momentum.
Muzarabani was named player of the match for his match-winning spell, which dismantled Australia's middle order, including the scalps of Glenn Maxwell and other key batsmen.
The result is nostalgic, as it follows Zimbabwe's famous five-wicket victory over Australia in the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, making it 2-0 in their head-to-head at the event.
The victory throws Group B wide open, with Zimbabwe now level on points with hosts Sri Lanka at the top, while Australia must regroup ahead of their next fixture.
Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza hailed the performance as a team effort, emphasizing the bowlers' discipline under pressure.
"This is a massive win for us and for Zimbabwe cricket. We've shown we can compete with the best," Raza said in a post-match interview.
Australian skipper, reflecting on the loss, acknowledged lapses in execution during the chase but remained optimistic about bouncing back in the tournament.
The ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, continues with matches across multiple venues having began on February 7, 2026, and is scheduled to conclude with the final on March 8, 2026.
