Zimbabwean authorities have apprehended armed robbery suspect Daniel Munyanyi in Bikita following a violent shootout in Zaka that left two CID detectives dead and three others seriously injured. The arrest was facilitated by members of the public after a high-profile manhunt.
Masvingo - The Zimbabwe Republic Police has apprehended a high-profile armed robbery suspect following a violent confrontation in Masvingo on Sunday, leaving two police detectives dead and three others seriously wounded, officials said on Monday.
The suspect, identified as 50-year-old Daniel Munyanyi, was arrested by members of the public in the Nyika area of Bikita late Monday afternoon.
His capture followed a 36-hour manhunt triggered by a dawn shootout on March 1 at his rural residence in Ndume Village, Zaka.
Police statements say a team of detectives from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Homicide Division in Harare had tracked Munyanyi to his home in connection with a string of armed robberies in the capital, Harare.
The suspect reportedly opened fire on the units as they moved to effect an arrest.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) identified the deceased as Detective Sergeant Bernard Chimbeke(37) and Detective Constable Casper Antonio McKenzie Chitsowe (43).
While official police statements initially focused on the fatalities, internal law enforcement sources confirmed that the exchange of fire left three additional officers with severe injuries.
Reports say one detective reportedly underwent an emergency leg amputation, while two others suffered multiple gunshot wounds to their lower extremities.
"The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Daniel Munyanyi at Nyika Area, Bikita, Masvingo, while hiding late this afternoon," said National Police Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi.
"The arrest was effected by members of the public. The firearm used in the commission of murder cases has also been recovered," Commissioner Nyathi said.
Police boss, Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba, expressed condolences to the deceased officers' families.
"The Commissioner-General expresses his deepest condolences to the Chimbeke and Chitsowe families over this unfortunate incident and tragic loss," Commissioner Nyathi stated in the statement.
The ZRP also praised the "bravery and cooperation" of the civilians in Nyika who recognized the suspect following the mid-day release of his photograph and coordinated his capture before he could flee the province.
Munyanyi is expected to appear in court later this week to face multiple charges, including two counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, and several counts of armed robbery.
