More Rural Doctors for Australia as Monash Mildura GP Academy Opens 2027 Applications
Monash University has opened applications for the 2027 intake of the Monash Mildura General Practice (GP) Academy. Funded by the Australian Federal Government, the four-year graduate-entry medical program admits 10 students annually to study locally, aiming to address critical doctor shortages in Sunraysia, the Riverland and far west New South Wales.
Mildura – Monash University has officially opened applications for the 2027 intake of its Mildura General Practice Academy, a federal government-funded initiative aimed at expanding the primary healthcare workforce across regional Australia.
The four-year graduate-entry medical degree, which welcomed its inaugural cohort earlier this year, admits 10 students annually under a localised study pathway designed to retain medical practitioners in regional centers upon graduation.
Monash Rural Health Head of School, Professor Shane Bullock, stated that training healthcare professionals directly within local communities remains a vital strategy for addressing persistent Geberal Practitioner deficits in underserved regions.
"With Sunraysia, the Riverland and far west NSW among the most underserved regions for GPs in Australia, addressing the shortage of GPs and RGs (Rural Generalists) is critical," Professor Bullock said.
He noted that the institutional framework integrates clinical placements with long-term professional development structures to support junior doctors throughout their early careers.
"Our program works in partnership with the local community and our passionate Mildura staff to ensure these students get the best possible start and are supported to remain local," Professor Bullock added.
