Chatunga Mugabe Bail Hearing Postponed to Thursday
The bail application of Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, son of late Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe, and co-accused Tobias Matonhodze was postponed to Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Alexandra Magistrate’s Court due to technical issues and outstanding documents. They face charges including attempted murder in a Hyde Park shooting incident.
Johannesburg - The bail application for Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the youngest son of Zimbabwe's late former President Robert Mugabe and his co-accused Tobias Matonhodze on the Hyde Park shooting incident, has been postponed to tomorrow, Thursday March 5, by the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court.
The delay is a result of a combination of technical issues and the need for additional documentation, leaving the pair in custody as investigations continue into a high-profile shooting incident.
Mugabe (28) and Matonhodze, now believed to be his bodyguard, made a brief appearance in court yesterday morning, Tuesday March 3.
The proceedings were halted due to an electricity failure at the court and outstanding documents that the defense team is still awaiting from the prosecution, reports say.
Prosecutors have indicated that forensic reports and criminal records are among the pending items, with reports suggesting potential new charges related to immigration status may also be under consideration.
The charges against Mugabe and Matonhodze arise from a February 19 shooting at the Mugabe family's upscale residence in Johannesburg's Hyde Park suburb.
A 23-year-old gardener was critically injured during an alleged dispute, sustaining gunshot wounds that required hospitalization.
South African Police Service (SAPS) officers were alerted by private security and had to force entry into the fortified property to respond.
Investigators recovered bullet cartridges at the scene but have yet to locate the firearm used in the incident.
In addition to attempted murder, the accused face counts of defeating the ends of justice and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Police also reportedly seized a BMW vehicle equipped with sirens and flashing lights from the property, prompting further scrutiny.
The pair were arrested shortly after the event and made their first court appearance on February 23, where the matter was initially postponed for further investigation and to prepare for the bail hearing.
