Zvishavane - As countries across Africa commemorated International Workers' Day, the Zvishavane Pool Association took a unique approach to celebrating the contributions of workers by hosting a vibrant Workers’ Day Pool Tournament that brought together the community in an atmosphere of sport, unity and social connection.

Traditionally marked by marches, speeches and reflections on labour rights, Workers’ Day in Zvishavane this year carried a recreational twist.

The tournament drew participants from across the town, including miners, small business owners, informal traders and young professionals, all eager to unwind and celebrate their hard work through friendly competition.

"As a way of honouring the hardworking workers from different sectors of the economy, we felt it good to try and align with the broader call for prioritising mental health in the workplace in Zimbabwe, ensuring a healthy and productive workforce.

"I believe this tournament has provided much needed mental break for workers, moving them from depression and and fostering social cohesion," said Courage Maimba, Secretary General Zvishavane Pool Association.

Mining companies place a high value on the commitment, resilience and dedication of their workers, recognising that every stage of production depends on their skill and effort

"Workers’ Day is a powerful reminder to recognise and appreciate every individual whose effort drives Mega Mining and Milling's success.

"It reflects the company’s strong commitment to teamwork, discipline and sustainable growth.

"Above all, it is a moment to honour the people who are the true foundation behind our progress," Ronald Mugagavari, Director of Mega Mining and Milling Company said.

Beyond competition, the event highlighted the role of sport in strengthening relationships, particularly among couples.

Participants noted that shared recreational spaces like pool halls are helping to foster communication and companionship, reinforcing ties within families and communities.

"If couples could adapt and normalise supporting each other in sport and standing in to cheer each other, the divorce rate and domestic violence will be significantly reduced.

"Sport can bring and bind people together. So many relationships have been initiated from sport associations, "said Marriage Counsellor, Pastor Nyasha Mhazo of Light Family Ministries.

The local celebrations complemented National commemorations by the Zimbabwe Public Service Commission , which observed the day under the theme: “Honouring the dignity of labour – defending workers’ rights, fair wages, and social protection for all.”

As Africa continues to reflect on the importance of workers and their contributions, Zvishavane’s approach serves as a reminder that celebration can also mean connection.

Through a simple game of pool, the community found a meaningful way to honour labour by strengthening the very social fabric that sustains it.
