Shurugwi Man in Court for Murder
A Shurugwi man has appeared in court on a murder charge over an alleged fatal assault at Wonderer Mine. Police investigations continue as law enforcement intensifies efforts to combat violent crime in the district.
Shurugwi – A 34-year-old Shurugwi man has appeared before the Shurugwi Magistrates Court facing a murder charge following an alleged fatal assault linked to a gold mining dispute, as police continue their crackdown on violent crime in the district.
Spencer Sibanda, of Marira Village under Chief Banga, appeared before Magistrate Sithembinkosi Gowero charged with murder.
According to the State, on May 6, 2026, at around 7pm, Sibanda and several accomplices allegedly gathered at Mumvuri Bus Terminus armed with hoes, iron bars, axes and machetes before loading the weapons into motor vehicles and proceeding to Wonderer Mine.
Prosecutors allege that the group intended to commit acts of violence over a gold mining dispute.
Upon arrival at the mine, they allegedly attacked Tinashe George Mutikinya, who sustained a serious head injury.
The court heard that Mutikinya managed to flee the scene and used his blue T-shirt to bandage the wound before walking along the Shurugwi–Wonderer Road. He later collapsed and died.
The other suspects are identified as Knowledge Matumbu, Douglas Tsvangira, Degom, DZ, TK, Tadzemwa, Chidhende, Mukuru Shumba, Godalming and Ben Cry.
Police investigations to locate the remaining suspects are continuing.
Sibanda is represented by Rashid Parere of Mapfumo Mavese Law Firm and was remanded to a later date.
