Senior Reporter Suspended Over ZBC "Missing Millions" Story, Internal Probe Hinted

Harare - Reports say Alpha Media Holdings (AMH) has formally suspended one of its senior reporters, Freeman Makopa, following the retraction of a high-profile investigative piece concerning alleged financial irregularities at the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC).

The suspension marks a critical turning point in a saga that has intertwined media ethics with high-level political maneuvering, political analyst Reason Wafawarova says.

The story, which alleged that US$52 million in ZBC license fee revenue was unaccounted for, prompted an unreserved apology from the Zimbabwe Independent to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the ZBC Board and Board Chairperson Helliate Rushwaya.

According to Wafawarova, insiders say a three-member panel has been convened by AMH to investigate the editorial lapses that led to the publication of the unsubstantiated claims.

Editor Faith Zaba acknowledged in a public statement that the figures cited were not supported by any verified official audit findings.

The publication has since removed the article from its digital platforms, citing a failure to corroborate the allegations with the Auditor-General’s reports or forensic evidence.

Looking at the gravity of Makopa’s suspension, Wafawarova said one must examine the administrative and political climate surrounding the ZBC in early 2026.

In mid-2025, the government enacted the Broadcasting Services Amendment Act, which mandated that all motorists pay a ZBC radio license fee as a prerequisite for vehicle insurance and licensing.

The move was met with significant public backlash and became a lightning rod for criticism regarding state media funding.

In February 2026, President Mnangagwa executed a Ministerial reshuffle, reassigning Jenfan Muswere from the Ministry of Information to the Ministry of Skills Audit and Development.

Reports indicate the reshuffle followed a period of friction between Muswere and the ZBC Board.

Prior to his reassignment, Muswere had attempted to dismiss Board Chairperson Helliate Rushwaya.

The Ministry of Information has suggested that the Zimbabwe Independent story may have been a "planted" narrative designed to destabilize the ZBC board during the ministerial transition.

Government officials have publicly characterized the story as a tool for "failed agendas," implying that the false audit claims were leaked to the press by embittered political actors.
