Hon. Nyathi Pays Tribute to Victor Matemadanda Legacy

Shurugwi — Former Shurugwi Member of Parliament and ZANU-PF Secretary for Education, Research and Ideology, Cde Robson Nyathi says the late Ambassador, Victor Matemadanda, will be remembered as a visionary leader whose life's mission was to ensure every freedom fighter is accorded the dignity, honour and respect their sacrifices deserved.

As tributes continue to pour in from across the country, Nyathi's reflections offer a portrait of a man driven less by personal ambition than by an enduring commitment to the ideals of the liberation struggle.

"Cde Victor Matemadanda was a visionary leader whose values and aspirations were centred on ensuring that every freedom fighter was treated with the utmost dignity and respect. That conviction defined his public life," Hon. Nyathi said.

He said Matemadanda embraced the liberation struggle at a tender age, dedicating himself to the aspirations of a people yearning for freedom and self-determination.

Those formative experiences would shape his philosophy of leadership for the rest of his life, he said.

Following Zimbabwe's independence, he served in the Zimbabwe National Army before assuming leadership within the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association, where he rose to become Secretary General.

In that role, he became one of the country's most recognisable voices advocating for the welfare, recognition and empowerment of liberation war veterans.

Hon. Nyathi said Ambassador Matemadanda's work ethic, discipline and visionary leadership earned him the confidence of both his peers and the country's leadership.

"Through hard work, commitment and visionary leadership, Cde Matemadanda was appointed Deputy Minister of Defence and War Veterans Affairs while serving as Secretary General of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association.

"He remained unwavering in advancing the aspirations of those who fought for our country's freedom," he said.

Hon. Nyathi believes Matemadanda discharged his responsibility with distinction.

"Because of his unquestionable party credentials and unwavering commitment to the ideals of the liberation struggle, His Excellency, President Emmerson Mnangagwa, entrusted him with the responsibility of National Political Commissar.

"He played a pivotal role in consolidating and strengthening ZANU-PF before his appointment as Zimbabwe's Ambassador to Mozambique and Eswatini," Hon. Nyathi said.

His diplomatic posting represented another chapter in a career dedicated to national service.

Stationed in Maputo and accredited to Eswatini, Matemadanda continued to represent Zimbabwe with the same conviction that had characterised his political life.

Beyond politics, Hon. Nyathi said, Ambassador Matemadanda understood that effective leadership demanded continuous learning.

"He academically empowered himself because he believed that informed leadership produces sound decisions.

"To him, education was not merely an achievement but a lifelong instrument for effective service," Hon. Nyathi said.

He said throughout his public life, Matemadanda remained known for his forthright speeches, unwavering patriotism and steadfast defence of Zimbabwe's sovereignty and the values of the liberation struggle.

According to Hon. Nyathi, his political convictions were never guided by convenience but by principle.

"He was a hard-to-replace patriotic cadre who worked tirelessly during the birth and consolidation of the Second Republic.

"We all know his bold speeches in representing both the country and its people.

"He remained immovable from the ethos and principles of the liberation struggle.

"Whenever our people appeared to drift from those values, he possessed both the wisdom and the courage to guide them back without fear or favour.

"He was a principled man who always sought to do what was right, regardless of circumstance," Hon. Nyathi said.

While Matemadanda's political journey inevitably intersected with periods of intense national debate and internal party contestation, Hon. Nyathi insists his defining legacy should be measured not by those moments but by the values he consistently championed.

For Hon. Nyathi, the late Ambassador's greatest contribution lies in his unwavering belief that the sacrifices made during Zimbabwe's liberation should forever be honoured through the dignity afforded to those who fought for independence.

"It is a great loss to the nation and to the revolutionary movement. However, we draw solace from the knowledge that if we embrace the aspirations and values that Cde Matemadanda stood for, our party will remain united, continue to grow and inspire future generations to safeguard the gains of our liberation," Hon. Nyathi said.

As Zimbabwe bids farewell to one of its distinguished liberation war veterans turned diplomat, Ambassador Victor Matemadanda leaves behind a legacy woven into the fabric of the nation's history, he said, a legacy of patriotism, disciplined service, principled leadership and an enduring commitment to preserving the ideals upon which independent Zimbabwe was founded.
