Birchenough Bridge Murder Suspect Arrested in Shurugwi
Shurugwi Police have arrested a 22-year-old Birchenough Bridge man accused of murdering his 69-year-old uncle after a beer drink and stealing his wristwatch before fleeing. He has been handed over to Birchenough Bridge Police.
Shurugwi — A 22-year-old Birchenough Bridge man wanted in connection with the alleged murder of his 69-year-old uncle has been arrested in Shurugwi after reportedly fleeing the area following the incident.
Thembalami Mthethwa was arrested on Thursday in Pasimupindu, Shurugwi District, allegedly while wearing a gold wristwatch believed to have been stolen from the deceased, Watson Mthethwa (69) of Chemufana Village in the Bhegedhe area under Chief Chamutsa.
Police allege that the murder occurred on June 22 at Muchini Shops in Birchenough Bridge after the suspect and the deceased had been drinking beer together.
It is alleged that Mthethwa stabbed his uncle several times before removing his trousers and stealing his gold wristwatch, leaving the victim partially clothed at the scene.
Following the incident, the suspect allegedly fled to Pasimupindu, where alert residents tipped off police, leading to his arrest by Shurugwi Police.
He was subsequently handed over to Birchenough Bridge Police, who are continuing with investigations.
Police commended members of the public for their vigilance, saying community cooperation played a key role in the suspect's arrest.
Mthethwa is expected to appear in court facing a charge of murder.
