Three South African Police Officers Die in Suspected Love Triangle

Bhisho - The South African Police Service in the Eastern Cape has been plunged into mourning following a harrowing shooting incident in Kariega that claimed the lives of three police officers in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The tragedy, which appears to have roots in a domestic dispute, has triggered high-level investigations by both the police service and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.

Reports from Zwelitsha indicate that the bloodshed occurred at a residence on Rudman Street at approximately 12:45 a.m.

A police statement on the incident says responding officers arrived at the scene to discover three of their colleagues suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Authorities have since identified the deceased as 48-year-old Constable Riaan Van Heerden of the Gqeberha Flying Squad, 22-year-old Constable Stach Janties of the KwaNobuhle SAPS and 24-year-old Constable Cerwynn Williams of the Kariega SAPS.

Preliminary findings by investigators suggest a volatile confrontation initiated when a male constable, identified as the former boyfriend of Constable Janties, forcibly gained entry into the premises.

Reports say Constable Williams was also present at the residence at the time of the intrusion.

Witnesses alerted the authorities after a volley of gunfire erupted within the home.

The violence resulted in two officers being declared dead at the scene, while the third succumbed to injuries shortly after arrival at Cuyler Hospital.

In the aftermath of the shooting, forensic teams recovered a state-issued firearm and ten live rounds of ammunition from the scene.

Police say the items are currently undergoing ballistic analysis to determine the exact sequence of events.

Due to the nature of the fatalities and the involvement of police personnel, the matter has since been handed over to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for a parallel investigation as mandated by the IPID Act.

Furthermore, the SAPS has initiated an internal disciplinary docket to address the administrative ramifications of the tragedy.

The Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata, expressed grief over the incident, describing the event as a monumental blow to the provincial force.

He said the organisation is prioritising the welfare of the bereaved families and the colleagues of the fallen members.

“This is a tragic and devastating loss for the SAPS family.

Three young officers have lost their lives under heartbreaking circumstances.

We are providing trauma debriefing and counselling to all members affected, and we will ensure the families receive the support they need during this difficult time,” Lieutenant General Ncata stated.

While the motive remains under investigation, the SAPS says it maintains a strict lid on further specifics to ensure the legal process is not compromised.

SAPS' Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana confirmed that the identities were released only after the next of kin had been formally notified.
