Ex-Con Robbery Suspect Shot by Police After House Raid Attempt in Kwekwe
Kwekwe, Zimbabwe - Police in the central Zimbabwean city of Kwekwe have shot and arrested a recently released prisoner in connection with a series of armed robberies in the Mbizo area.
The suspect was shot on the leg while attempting to flee during a home raid attempt on a woman in Mbizo 11.
The suspect, identified as Leonard Mugashi (24), also known as "Shato," and of no fixed abode, was apprehended on Thursday January 29, 2026, at approximately 0800 hours, Midlands Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said.
"The arrest happened after he was intercepted during the process of an attack of a woman at her house in Mbizo 11 whom he threatened to stab with a knife," Mahoko said on a statement.
Mugashi attempted to flee the scene but was pursued by officers.
"He continued running and was subdued after being shot once on the knee cap following warning shots fired by determined police officers who called for him to stop," Mahoko added.
After the arrest, searches recovered an okapi knife and clothing items that Mugashi is alleged to have worn during previous robberies in and around Kwekwe.
Investigators have so far linked the suspect to three robbery incidents in Mbizo suburbs, specifically Mbizo 8, 2 and 22, where he allegedly operated with two accomplices still at large.
The group, armed with knives, an iron bar and an axe, reportedly assaulted two victims who resisted, one Zivanai Machekera (47)and his wife Estery Faki (44) who were struck with the iron bar.
From the three homes targeted, the robbers allegedly stole US$415 in cash along with various clothing items.
Mahoko thanked the public for their cooperation with investigators.
