Gweru - The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Midlands Province have announced a breakthrough in regional crime prevention following the recovery of six motor vehicles stolen during a recent crime wave in Gweru.

The success, however, comes as detectives initiate a new search for a silver Toyota Allion stolen in a daylight heist in Kwekwe on Friday, April 17.

Between March 26 and April 16, 2026, a series of thefts targeted old shape Honda Fit vehicles across Gweru suburbs of Ascot Extension, Old Ascot and Mtapa.

Official police records say the recovered fleet consists entirely of "old shape" Honda Fit models, with a total estimated value of US$20,000.

The vehicles were located in various areas including the Gweru Central Business District, Pfende plots and Riverside.

While the recoveries mark a victory for the Midlands Police, a new case has emerged in the neighboring city of Kwekwe.

On April 17, 2026, at approximately 12 p.m, a silver Toyota Allion, registration number AGD 0170, was stolen from outside a residence in the Fitchlea suburb.

The complainant, Pruate Muteveri, reportedly left the vehicle unlocked with the keys in the ignition.

“Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a case of theft of a motor vehicle which occurred in Fitchlea, Kwekwe on 17 April 2026 at about 1200 hours.

“The vehicle was unlocked, with the keys on the ignition. Muteveri intended to return to the vehicle early, ” Midlands Acting Police Spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Mollidias Zivuku said.

The rise in vehicle-related crimes in the Midlands has prompted authorities to issue urgent security advisories to the public.

Assistant Inspector Zivuku said vehicle owners should take proactive measures to deter opportunistic criminals who frequently target residential areas, also asking for public assistance with information that may lead to the recovery of the stolen Kwekwe vehicle.

“We also urge members of the public to strengthen their security at home wherever possible, installing car alarm systems and park vehicles in locked garages where it is harder to access.

“We are appealing to members of the public who might have information that can help to the recovery of the stolen motor vehicle and the arrest of suspects to visit any nearest police station," Zivuku said.
