Mzembi Granted US$1,000 Bail Pending Judgment in US$2 Million Fraud Case
Zimbabwe’s High Court grants former minister Walter Mzembi US$1,000 bail in a US$2 million fraud case over 2010 FIFA World Cup TV donations, with strict conditions on travel and residence.
Harare - Former Cabinet Minister Walter Mzembi has been granted US$1,000 bail by the High Court in Harare as he awaits judgment in a case in which he is accused of defrauding the Government of US$2 million during his time as Minister of Tourism and Hospitality.
The bail ruling was issued on Monday, 4 May.
As part of the conditions, Mzembi is required to pay the set amount, surrender his passport, remain at his Harare residence and restrict his movements to within a 30-kilometre radius of the court.
Mzembi was arrested in June last year upon his return from South Africa.
The charges stem from allegations that he authorised the donation of television sets intended for 2010 FIFA World Cup fan parks without obtaining approval from Treasury or Cabinet.
His legal representative, Emmanuel Samundombe, said Mzembi’s continues detained due to an administrative mix-up involving his release papers, but indicated that his release was expected today, Tuesday.
