Lesotho High Commission Issues Urgent Safety Advisory for Citizens in South Africa
The High Commission of the Kingdom of Lesotho has released an official advisory urging its nationals living in South Africa to exercise extreme caution following a surge in sporadic protests targeting foreign nationals across several regions.
Pretoria - The High Commission of the Kingdom of Lesotho in Pretoria has officially issued an urgent advisory note directed at all Basotho nationals currently residing within the Republic of South Africa.
The formal communication comes in response to a volatile security situation characterised by sporadic protests targeting foreign nationals in some parts of South Africa.
An official statement released on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the High Commission advised all Basotho residing in the Republic of South Africa to exercise a high degree of caution.
The warning is a direct consequence of localised demonstrations that have increasingly focused on non-nationals, posing a potential risk to the safety and security of Lesotho’s citizens abroad.
In an effort to mitigate these risks, the advisory provided specific behavioral guidelines for those in affected areas.
The document also said Lesotho nationals are strongly urged to avoid, as far as possible, areas where protests or demonstrations may be taking place, and limit non-essential travel during periods of high tension.
Furthermore, the High Commission has reminded its citizens of their legal obligations and safety protocols, stating that they should carry valid identification and relevant documentation at all times to ensure smooth interactions with local authorities and facilitate diplomatic assistance if required.
In the event of an emergency, the High Commission said Lesotho nationals are advised to report the same to the South African Police Service (SAPS) and to inform the Lesotho High Commission in Pretoria, as well as Lesotho Consulates in Johannesburg, Durban, Klerksdorp and Welkom for appropriate assistance.
