Harare — The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has arrested 50-year-old Bulawayo businessman, Lotshe Yuri Rodgers Mangena, in connection with the chaotic firearm and assault incident after a schoolboy rugby match at Eaglesvale College in Harare last weekend.

Mangena was apprehended by law enforcement agents following public outrage over ugly scenes that marred the sporting fixture between the hosts and Bulawayo based Christian Brothers College (CBC) on June 13.

He has since been hauled before the Harare Magistrates Court facing criminal charges.

The police have also recovered and confiscated the weapon used during the sports day disturbance.

National Police Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the breakthrough in the investigations, noting that the suspect has already been processed through the judicial system.

"The ZRP confirms the arrest of Lotshe Yuri Rodgers Mangena (50) for assault and pointing a firearm. The suspect has since appeared before Harare Magistrate Court. Meanwhile, the ZRP has since seized the firearm from the suspect," Commissioner Nyathi said.

The violence erupted at the conclusion of the highly tense encounter after Eaglesvale secured a narrow 14-13 victory via a last minute penalty decision.

The sporting outcome reportedly incensed a section of the visiting supporters, leading to a pitch invasion aimed at confronting the match officials as the host celebrated.

During the subsequent melee on the field, Mangena, who had traveled from Bulawayo to watch the match, allegedly produced a handgun from his clothing and displayed it to the crowd.

He is also accused of physically assaulting a 16-year-old Form Four student by striking him in the face during the commotion.

Appearing before Harare Magistrate, Ruth Moyo, Mangena was charged with assault and contravening section 27 of the Firearms Act, which criminalises pointing a firearm.

The accused, represented by legal counsel, was granted US$100 bail with specific reporting conditions, and the matter has been remanded to the 2nd of July 2026 for further trial proceedings.

The shocking escalation of sports field rowdiness to armed intimidation has drawn sharp criticism from stakeholders, with the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) reiterating the need for absolute discipline, safety and sportsmanship during school sporting competitions.
