Two Arrested for Gokwe Armed Robberies and Theft
The Zimbabwe Republic Police in Midlands Province have apprehended two suspects linked to a series of violent robberies and housebreakings targeting teachers and residents in Gokwe, two accomplices remain at large.
Gokwe - Police have apprehended two men in connection with a string of violent robberies and unlawful entry cases in the Gokwe area.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that while two individuals are in custody, a manhunt has been launched for two additional accomplices, identified as Thulani Ndebele and an individual known only as Aaron, who managed to evade capture.
The detained suspects have been identified by police as Handson Mapurisa (32) and Bruce Dzungu (29) both residents under Chief Nemangwe in Gokwe.
Police investigative reports say the criminal activities began on November 30, 2025, when a gang armed with logs and sjamboks targeted a residential property at Musita Primary School.
The victims, a married couple employed as teachers at the institution, were assaulted inside their home.
"The suspects forced open the door, gained entry and attacked the complainants," Midlands Provincial Community Relations Liaison Officer, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, stated in an official briefing.
"The suspects took two Samsung cellphones and solar panels," he said.
The initial breakthrough in the investigation occurred on December 2, 2025, with the arrest of Mapurisa, who subsequently provided information that linked his three associates to the crime.
"A Samsung cellphone was recovered from Mapurisa," Inspector Mahoko said, adding that the suspect "was later taken to court on 4 December 2025 where he was convicted and sentenced to six years imprisonment effective."
Despite Mapurisa's conviction, the remaining members of the syndicate continued their operations into the following year.
Investigation reports reveal that on February 22, 2026, the second suspect and his accomplices executed another residential break-in at Mapfungautsi, Gokwe.
During the second incident, the perpetrators fled with 10,000 South African Rand, US$3,265 in cash, a power bank and a satchel.
Continued intelligence gathering by detectives culminated in the arrest of the second suspect, Dzungu, on May 16, 2026.
Upon interrogation, Dzungu corroborated the involvement of the two outstanding fugitives, Ndebele and Aaron.
Dzungu remains in police custody pending formal arraignment before the local magistrates' court.
In light of the high-value cash theft in Mapfungautsi, police have renewed calls for residents to review their personal security measures and avoid hoarding large volumes of hard currency outside the formal banking system.
"We encourage members of the public not to keep large sums of money at home," Inspector Mahoko said.
"We also appeal to members of the public who might have information that might lead to the arrest of the outstanding two suspects to approach any nearest police station," he said.
