Melbourne - A prominent criminal defense law firm in Melbourne has launched a continuous emergency text-messaging service to grant individuals instant access to defense counsel during after-hours police investigations.

The initiative by Gallant Law comes in response to Victoria recording its highest crime rate in ten years, which has resulted in a substantial increase in police interviews across the state.

Legal experts say statements made during these initial interrogations frequently form the core of the prosecution's subsequent legal case.

Domestic legal metrics indicate that an overwhelming majority of detainees participate in law enforcement interviews without fully comprehending the long-term judicial ramifications.

Data from the Victorian Director of Public Prosecutions indicates that only 7 to 9 percent of local suspects exercise their right to silence.

Furthermore, collaborative research from  the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University and the University of Sydney revealed that false confessions were a factor in 17 percent of documented wrongful conviction cases across Australia.

The newly established emergency network is designed to provide professional legal guidance before formal questioning commences, targeting high-stakes files such as corporate WorkSafe inquiries, vehicular fatalities, sexual offense allegations and homicide investigations.

"By the time most clients call us, they've already spoken to police," said Lauren Cassimatis, Principal Lawyer and Director of Gallant Law.

"That conversation is already part of their case. The call that protects someone's future needs to happen before the interview, not after," she said.

Operational protocols within criminal defense show that initial contact with legal firms during late-night detentions is predominantly initiated by relatives, spouses or professional colleagues rather than the immediate suspect.

The direct SMS communication framework was specifically structured to accommodate these third-party emergency requests.

Legal analysts note that early professional intervention is critical not only for managing immediate reputational risks when law enforcement makes initial contact, but also for shaping the admissibility of evidence and the structural framing of a client's defense from the outset of criminal proceedings.
