Harare - Political commentator and anti-sanctions campaigner Rutendo Matinyarare has stirred debate on social media after alleging that Zimbabwe's intelligence services once attempted to recruit him, but negotiations failed after both parties could not reach a mutual understanding.
The claim emerged during Matinyarare's ongoing public dispute with businessman Tafadzwa Chidawa, where he revealed that his anti-sanctions advocacy reportedly attracted the attention of the country's intelligence establishment in 2018.
According to Matinyarare, officials from Zimbabwe's Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) invited him to return to Zimbabwe with the intention of bringing him into their operations after observing his campaign against international sanctions.
"In 2018, the CIO, having seen my anti-sanctions campaign, invited me to Zimbabwe in an effort to recruit me to work for them. We couldn't reach an agreement," Matinyarare said.
The statement has generated widespread discussion online, with some supporters commending him for allegedly refusing the offer, while others have questioned why the information is only surfacing now amid his escalating feud with Chidawa.
The revelation adds a new dimension to the increasingly public exchanges between Matinyarare and Chidawa, who have been trading accusations over political influence, power dynamics and connections within Zimbabwe's political landscape.
