Adelaide - The Malinauskas Government has come under heavy fire from the Public Service Association (PSA) of South Australia following its decision to rehire multinational corporation, Serco, to manage the Adelaide Remand Centre (ARC).

The move, described by union leadership as a significant policy reversal, has sparked a heated debate regarding the privatisation of essential public services under a Labour administration.

The Adelaide Remand Centre was originally privatised in 2019 by the former Marshall Liberal Government.

While expectations were high among supporters that the newly re-elected Labour Government would return the facility to public hands upon the contract's expiration in August, the government has instead opted to maintain the private arrangement.

Officials cited complex contractual obligations and potential financial burdens on taxpayers as the primary reasons for the extension.

The PSA has however rejected the justifications, suggesting that the timing of the announcement was intended to avoid public scrutiny.

PSA General Secretary, Charlotte Watson, expressed disappointment in the administration's direction, arguing that the decision contradicts the fundamental principles of the party.

“We’re calling bullshit on this, [we] got the contract and there is no monetary penalty for finishing as agreed after seven years, the Minister claims there are ‘serious challenges’ in ending the contract and that taxpayers would have have stump up alot of money to Serco, we think that’s bullshit,” Watson said.

The union leader further criticised the manner in which the decision was communicated to the public, characterising the Friday afternoon release as a strategic move to bury unpopular news.

She noted that the decision has caused significant distress among those who campaigned for a return to public sector management.

“The fact this decision was put out on a Friday arvo via press release shows Malinauskas just doesn’t want to own up to it, in politics it’s called ‘taking out the garbage’ where you sneakily announce something when everyone is knocking off and going to the pub,” Watson added.

The backlash comes in the wake of a recent report by the McKell Institute, which provided a critical analysis of the ARC’s privatisation.

The report suggested that the private management model had failed to meet expectations regarding cost-efficiency, safety standards and general accountability.

Despite these findings, the government is set on its current course, leading to accusations from the PSA that the administration lacks a progressive agenda.

The union maintains that the decision represents a missed opportunity to strengthen the public sector.

“This decision is the antithesis of Labor values, and it shows how the Malinauskas government is good at winning elections, but has no core values and no progressive agenda,” Watson said.
