Sydney — Tesla and Polestar recorded a combined 5,854 battery electric vehicle sales in Australia in September, taking their total sales for 2026 to 43,386 vehicles, according to the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC).

The figure represents a 77% increase compared with the same period last year, highlighting continued growth in demand for electric vehicles (EV) across the Australian market.

The EVC said the three-month average for Tesla and Polestar sales during the September quarter remained strong at 6,199 vehicles.

The Tesla Model Y family dominated sales, accounting for 4,476 vehicles in September, or 76% of all models sold across the Tesla and Polestar ranges.

Tesla Model 3 sales also rose sharply, increasing 60% compared with September last year, with 1,178 vehicles delivered.

The increase comes as Tesla this week announced a new base-model variant of the Model 3 sedan priced at less than $46,000 before on-road costs.

On a year-to-date basis, all Australian states and territories recorded significant increases in Tesla and Polestar sales, with growth ranging from 45.7% to 113.3%.

The EVC stressed that its monthly figures measure vehicles at the point of delivery rather than when orders are placed.

The September figures form part of the EVC's latest assessment of Australia's electric vehicle market, following the launch this week of its 10th annual State of EVs report.

The report was launched alongside Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, and provides data and analysis on electric vehicle sales across cars, vans, trucks and buses, as well as charging infrastructure, government policy and industry progress.

The report also outlines policies the EVC says are needed to maintain the acceleration of Australia's transition to electric vehicles.

The EVC said its monthly sales report covers only Tesla and Polestar and should not be interpreted as representing the entire Australian new vehicle market.

It said the figures are made available publicly to improve transparency and consumer confidence, while other vehicle manufacturers are invited to contribute sales data on a non-exclusive basis.

The EVC is Australia's peak national body representing the electric vehicle industry, with members across the electric vehicle value chain.
