Canberra — Australia’s postal network is facing a Parliamentary review aimed at improving its long-term financial sustainability and ensuring communities continue to have access to essential postal services as changing consumer habits reshape the industry.

The House of Representatives Standing Committee on Communications, the Arts and Sport says it will examine the future of Australia Post following a referral from Communications Minister, Anika Wells.

The inquiry comes amid declining letter volumes, reduced customer visits to some post offices and growing competition from international online marketplace retailers, which are changing the way postal services operate.

The committee says it will investigate opportunities to expand or diversify services offered through the post office network, with particular attention to maintaining the commercial viability of postal outlets and their importance to local communities.

The review will also give individuals, businesses and other stakeholders an opportunity to make submissions and contribute to discussions on how Australia's postal system should adapt to changing communication and business needs.

Minister Wells said Australia Post remained an important national institution but faced mounting challenges as consumer behaviour and commercial conditions evolved.

“Australia Post is a beloved institution, delivering vital services and connecting Australians across the country,” she said.

She said the inquiry would help identify ways of maintaining an accessible and sustainable postal service for communities and businesses.

The committee's chair, Susan Templeman, welcomed the referral, saying the inquiry would allow Parliament to hear directly from stakeholders and the wider community about the future of postal services.

Reports say the inquiry will consider the role of post offices beyond traditional mail delivery, particularly their contribution to communities where access to essential services may be limited.

The committee is expected to present its findings and recommendations in the second quarter of 2027.
