14 Die in Horrific Cross-Border Bus Accident Along Harare-Nyamapanda Highway
A fatal accident involving a Malawi-bound BRD Luxury Coach has reportedly claimed 14 lives along the Harare-Nyamapanda road near Suswe. The bus, traveling from Cape Town, South Africa, was carrying 63 passengers when it crashed yesterday afternoon, leaving several others injured and hospitalised in Mutoko and Kotwa.
Mutoko - A somber atmosphere has descended upon the Mashonaland East Province following a fatal road traffic accident that reportedly claimed 14 lives yesterday afternoon.
The tragedy occurred at the 176-kilometer peg along the Harare-Nyamapanda highway, May 5, a primary artery for cross-border travel between Zimbabwe and Mozambique.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that the vehicle involved was a Malawi-bound BRD Luxury Coach.
The bus was on a long-haul journey originating from Cape Town, South Africa, and was nearing the Suswe area around 1p.m. when disaster struck with 63 passengers on board.
“Initial police attendance at the scene indicated that 14 people died. The bus was carrying 63 passengers and some of the injured victims were taken to Mutoko District Hospital and Kotwa District Hospital," Commissioner Nyathi said.
While the deceased were being processed at the scene, the injured were distributed between Mutoko and Kotwa District Hospitals to receive emergency medical attention.
The condition of the remaining 49 passengers has not yet been fully detailed, though authorities are working to establish a comprehensive manifest and casualty list.
