Zimbabwean entrepreneur Freedom Mukanga has been awarded the prestigious Mandela Washington Fellowship (MWF) Leadership Impact Award, emerging as the top fellow among more than 7 800 participants from 49 African countries.

The honour was announced by the United States Embassy in Harare, which commended Mukanga for his exceptional leadership, innovation and measurable contribution to youth empowerment in Zimbabwe.

“Out of more than 7 800 Mandela Washington Fellows across 49 Sub-Saharan African countries, Freedom Mukanga from Zimbabwe rises to the top,” the embassy said in a statement shared on social media.

Mukanga received the award in recognition of his outstanding leadership and strong community impact, particularly through entrepreneurship training and mentorship initiatives that have benefited hundreds of young Zimbabweans.

The U.S. Embassy says Mukanga has effectively applied the skills, knowledge and networks gained through the Mandela Washington Fellowship to equip young people with practical business skills, leadership capacity and pathways to economic self-reliance.

“Through entrepreneurship training and mentorship, he has empowered hundreds of young Zimbabweans, demonstrating the lasting value of U.S. exchange programmes,” the embassy noted.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship, the flagship programme of the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI), aims to develop Africa’s next generation of leaders by offering academic study, leadership training and professional networking opportunities in the United States.

Mukanga’s achievement places Zimbabwe prominently on the continental stage for youth leadership excellence and highlights the growing influence of young entrepreneurs in driving social and economic transformation.

The award also reinforces the broader impact of international exchange programmes in promoting innovation, leadership development and cross-border collaboration among Africa’s emerging leaders.
