Durban — Police in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, have launched a full-scale manhunt after three gunmen shot and killed 11 people and wounded three others during a late-night attack on a house in the Ziko area of KwaMakhutha.

Thirteen men and one woman, believed to be pregnant, were gathered at a party inside the dwelling on Tuesday night when three armed suspects arrived and opened fire without warning.

South African Police Services (SAPS) reports say ten victims, including the woman, died at the scene.

Four others were rushed to hospital, where one later succumbed to gunshot wounds.

SAPS Acting National Commissioner, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, has ordered an immediate 72-hour tracking operation for the suspect.

"There is no place in our communities for the senseless taking of human lives,” she said.

“Police must act decisively, mobilise all available resources and pursue those responsible until they are brought before the courts," Lieutenant General Dimpane said.

Preliminary investigations reports indicate that some of the victims had been on Crime Intelligence’s radar in connection with illegal activities.

Police however declined to provide further details, citing the need to protect ongoing probes.

Although the motive remains unconfirmed, investigators have not ruled out a feud between rival groupings.

“We are confident that investigators are following a promising lead which could assist in securing a breakthrough in this case,” Lieutenant General Dimpane added.

SAPS has appealed to the public for credible information that may lead to the apprehension of the suspects.

SAPS said tip-offs can be made to the investigating team, anonymously via Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or through the MySAPS App.

The Provincial Commissioner has been directed to deploy every available resource.

Police stressed they will not relent until the suspects are arrested and brought to justice.
