Two Shot Dead in Gweru Police Gunfight With Armed Robbery Suspects
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) have confirmed a fatal shootout in Gweru involving an armed robbery syndicate, resulting in the deaths of two suspects as law enforcement intensifies its crackdown on violent crime.
Gweru - A violent confrontation between law enforcement and an armed robbery syndicate in Gweru ended in a fatal shootout last night, March 19, 2026, leaving two suspects dead.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the incident, which occurred as tactical units moved to intercept the armed gang in the Midlands capital.
The shootout is the latest in a series of high-stakes encounters between the police and increasingly bold robbery units targeting businesses and residential properties across the country.
"The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms a shootout incident with armed robbery suspects in Gweru tonight, resulting in the deaths of two robbers," national police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed.
The identities of the deceased are yet to be released.
The Gweru incident comes at a time when the ZRP has adopted a "zero tolerance" policy toward armed crime, following a directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs to neutralize violent syndicates that have been terrorizing the Midlands and Bulawayo provinces.
Security analysts suggest that of late, the frequency of the shootouts reflects both an increase in the availability of illegal firearms and a more aggressive tactical posture by the police Criminal Investigations Department.
Commissioner Nyathi said a comprehensive report will be provided later on.
"The ZRP will release detailed information on the 20th of March 2026," Nyathi said.
