Bloemspruit, South Africa - A 33-year-old South African woman has been sentenced to three life sentences by the Bloemfontein Regional Court for facilitating the repeated sexual abuse of her two underage biological daughters, and a niece, by her 36-year-old boyfriend.

The convictions are a result of extensive investigations by the Mangaung Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit led by Detective Sergeant Nthabiseng Ranthako.

The boyfriend was also given the same jail term for multiple charges of rape, sexual exploitation and common assault.

The court heard that on 17 November 2023, the woman took her 14-year-old girl to the residence of her boyfriend at Bergman Square in Bloemspruit where the minor was raped repeatedly.

"The mother left the victim at the premises. After preparing a meal, the boyfriend took advantage of the victim while she was asleep and raped her repeatedly," South African Police Services' Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli stated in a statement.

After the daughter alerted the mother of the abuse the following morning, she dismissed her.

"In a shocking betrayal of maternal protection, the mother returned the following morning and dismissed the ordeal," Sergeant Kareli said.

Instead, she facilitated more abuse, this time bringing her 11-year-old daughter and 10-year-old niece.

"The investigation further revealed that on subsequent dates, the mother orchestrated further abuse, subjecting her 11-year-old younger daughter and her 10-year-old niece to the boyfriend, even witnessing one of the horrific assaults," said Sergeant Kareli.

The horrific abuse was exposed by the victims' 30-year-old uncle, who learned of the abuse and immediately reported the matter to the Bloemspruit Police.

Subsequently, cases of rape, sexual exploitation and common assault were registered and transferred to the Mangaung FCS Unit for investigations.

Sergeant Kareli said the Provincial Police Commissioner in the Free State, Lieutenant General Thabang Lesia, strongly condemned the incident, saying it is betrayal of trust by a biological mother and her boyfriend.

He said Commissioner Lesia also praised the investigative team following the heavy sentences handed down.

In addition to the three life terms, the boyfriend was declared unfit to possess a firearm, prohibited from working with children and his details will be entered into the National Register for Sex Offenders.

The mother was given an additional twenty (20) years imprisonment for sexual exploitation and three (3) years imprisonment for common assault.

She was similarly declared unfit to possess a firearm, barred from working with children and her details added to the National Register for Sex Offenders.

"The Provincial Commissioner commends the exemplary work of Detective Sergeant Ranthako and the prosecuting team for ensuring that these perpetrators are permanently removed from society, sending a clear message that the exploitation and abuse of vulnerable children will not be tolerated," Sergeant Kareli said.
