Shurugwi Mourns Veteran Poet Brighton Mashazhu, Some Questioning Death
Mashazhu had complained of illness before his death but still chose to report for work. He complained of health complications after attending the First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa's cookout competition in Kwekwe.
Shurugwi - The arts community in Shurugwi is mourning the death of veteran poet and Zanu PF staff member Brighton Mashazhu, who died at the party's district offices after reportedly reporting for duty despite feeling unwell.
According to colleague, Philip Chatira, Mashazhu had complained of illness before his death but still chose to report for work.
"It is very sad. He was not feeling well but still came to work. I had asked him why he had decided to come in while sick," he said.
Chatira said he later discovered Mashazhu unresponsive in his office after noticing that his usual morning duties had not been carried out.
As the community grappled with the news, some individuals raised questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.
One source who requested anonymity claimed that Mashazhu had recently complained of health complications after attending the First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa's cookout competition in Kwekwe.
"We suspect foul play because he spoke about experiencing complications after returning from the event," the source alleged.
Another community member echoed similar concerns and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the poet's death.
However, no evidence has been presented to support claims of poisoning or any other criminal act, and authorities have not linked his death to any event or foul play.
Police and party officials had not released an official cause of death at the time of publication.
A postmortem examination is expected to establish the cause of death.
Meanwhile, tributes continue to pour in from fellow artists and cultural practitioners who worked closely with Mashazhu throughout his career.
High Voltage Poets production manager Siphosami Ndlovu described Mashazhu's death as a major loss to Zimbabwe's poetry fraternity.
"We are shocked and deeply saddened by the passing of Brighton Mashazhu.
"We have lost a fellow poet, colleague and friend whose contribution to poetry and the performing arts was immense. We shared stages with him at numerous district, provincial and national events, and his passion for poetry inspired many young artists.
"His passing leaves a huge void in our creative family," Ndlovu said.
Mashazhu was a long-serving member of High Voltage Poets.
Among his notable appearances was the Freedom of the City ceremony hosted by Gweru City Council in honour of President Emmerson Mnangagwa in 2022, where he shared the stage with fellow High Voltage Poets performers.
He was widely known for his energetic delivery of his favourite and signature poem, Kutamba Ngoma, which became popular with audiences at cultural gatherings and public events.
Beyond the stage, Mashazhu was also a published poet whose work featured in Yorira Ngoma Yenhetembo, a poetry anthology that showcased emerging and established literary voices.
Colleagues remembered him as a gifted performer, cultural ambassador and passionate advocate for the preservation of indigenous poetry and storytelling traditions.
Mashazhu will be buried at his rural home in Mukandapi following the completion of postmortem procedures.
His death marks the end of a distinguished artistic journey that touched audiences across Midlands Province and beyond, leaving behind a legacy that fellow poets say will continue to inspire future generations.
