EU Ambassador to Zimbabwe Katrin Hagemann Dies
European Union Ambassador to Zimbabwe Katrin Hagemann has died suddenly and unexpectedly at the age of her diplomatic tenure, with Government of Zimbabwe and the EU Delegation mourning her as a gracious diplomat and sincere partner.

Harare — European Union (EU) Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Katrin Hagemann, has died barely nine months after she was accredited to the country.
Ambassador Hagemann died on Thursday, September 3, 2026, the EU Delegation to Zimbabwe confirmed yesterday, September 4.
In a statement, the EU Delegation said her death was sudden and unexpected, and conveyed condolences to her family, friends, colleagues and all those mourning her loss.
“It is with deep sadness that we confirm the sudden and unexpected passing of H.E. Ms Katrin Hagemann, Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Zimbabwe, on 3 September 2026,” the EU Delegation said.
The delegation did not disclose the cause of death.
“In respect for the privacy of the family at this difficult time, there will be no further comments at this time,” it said.
Ambassador Hagemann had presented her credentials in Zimbabwe in December 2025, taking charge of the EU’s diplomatic mission at a time when relations between Zimbabwe and the European bloc were continuing to evolve.
Zimbabwe Government Chief Director for Information and Publicity, Nick Mangwana, described her death as a major loss to Zimbabwe-EU relations.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of H.E. Katrin Hagemann, Head of the EU Delegation to Zimbabwe,” Mangwana said.
He said Ambassador Hagemann had arrived in Zimbabwe with a commitment to strengthening relations between the country and the EU.
“Accredited just last December, she arrived with renewed commitment, continuing the positive trajectory of strengthening and maturing Zimbabwe-EU relations,” he said.
Mangwana described the late envoy as a gracious diplomat and sincere partner, extending condolences to her family, colleagues and the wider diplomatic community.
“Our heartfelt condolences to her family, colleagues, the diplomatic community and the EU. May she rest in peace,” he said.
The EU Delegation said a Book of Condolences would be opened to members of the public from Monday, September 7, to Thursday, September 10, available daily from 10am to 4pm at the EU Delegation to Zimbabwe.
Ambassador Hagemann's death comes at a time when Zimbabwe and the EU have been pursuing closer engagement through political dialogue and cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
Her tenure had been marked by efforts to deepen engagement between the two sides, as Zimbabwe continued to engage its international partners on economic development and other national priorities.
The EU remains one of Zimbabwe's significant international partners, with cooperation now extending to development, trade, governance, humanitarian assistance and other areas.
