Rottweiler Attack Leaves Baby Dead, Two Others Seriously Injured

Harare — A 48-year-old Glen View man has been arrested after his family’s Rottweiler attacked and killed his eight-month-old daughter and seriously injured two other people, including a two-year-old boy.
The man has been identified as John Nyandoro.
The incident occurred on Thursday afternoon, September 10, 2026, at the family’s Riverside residence in Glen View 7.
Police identified the deceased infant as Tayana Nyandoro.
According to police, Tayana’s mother, Rosemary Madzinga (43) was sitting in the yard holding the baby when she saw her former housemaid, 26-year-old Varaidzo Gumboreshumba, passing by.
Madzinga called Gumboreshumba into the yard, but shortly after she entered the premises, the family’s Rottweiler suddenly attacked her.
The commotion attracted neighbours, among them two-year-old Kupakwashe Gambo.
The dog then attacked the child, leaving him with serious head injuries.
As Madzinga attempted to protect her daughter, the dog attacked both mother and child, biting the infant on the head.
Tayana died at the scene from the injuries sustained in the attack.
Gumboreshumba and Kupakwashe were rushed to Sally Mugabe Hospital, where they remain admitted in critical condition after sustaining serious head injuries.
Harare provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luckmore Chakanza, confirmed the incident and the arrest of Tayana’s father, who is the owner of the dog.
“Police arrested a Glen View man in connection with the sudden death of an eight-month-old baby due to a vicious dog attack and severe injuries sustained by two other victims,” Chakanza said.
“The infant was bitten on the head and died on the spot," he said.
Following the attack, inspectors from the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) attended the scene and recommended that the dog be put down.
Police said records showed that the Rottweiler had been vaccinated against rabies on May 13, 2026.
However, authorities stressed that vaccination does not remove an owner's responsibility to ensure that a dangerous animal is properly controlled and secured.
The father, John, remains in police custody facing charges of culpable homicide and failure to secure a dangerous domestic animal in contravention of municipal by-laws.
Police said investigations are continuing.
