Harare Set to Host Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival National Finals

Harare – Zimbabwe's premier traditional dance competition, the Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival reaches its climax on the 1st of August 2026, when the national finals will be held at the Harare Gardens, bringing together the country's top traditional dance ensembles in a colourful celebration of indigenous culture and heritage.

Held under the theme "Ngoma Ngairire Shamwari", this year's finals will feature 10 provincial champions competing for the coveted national title while showcasing the diversity and richness of Zimbabwe's traditional dance traditions.

The journey to the national finals began on May 9, with provincial competitions staged across the country.

The contests drew enthusiastic participation from communities, reflecting the continued importance of traditional dance in preserving Zimbabwe's cultural heritage, promoting community identity and passing indigenous knowledge from one generation to the next.

Bulawayo will be represented by Ezimnyama Arts Ensemble, performing the Tsutsube dance, while Masvingo's Musa will showcase the Bira reVadzimu dance.

Dzimbahwe Nengoma from Mashonaland Central will perform Chinyambera, with hosts Harare represented by Shingai Dance Troupe, performing Mbakumba.

Matabeleland North's Amakhosikazi Cultural Ensemble will perform Isitshikitsha, while Matabeleland South will be represented by Bolamba Culture Birds performing Tsutsube.

Manicaland will be represented by Dapuraunanzva Dance Ensemble performing Mbakumba, Midlands by Chipolopolo Zambia Nyau with the Zambia Nyau dance.

Mashonaland West's Pisa Pisa Nyau Malawi will present the Gule Wamkulu dance and Mashonaland East by Marondera Gure Arts Group Chewa, showcasing Gulewankulu.

One of the festival organisers, Nyadzisayi Mirisawu, said preparations for the national showcase were progressing smoothly as excitement continued to build ahead of the highly anticipated event.

"The stage is being set, the drums are calling, and anticipation is building as the Chibuku Neshamwari Traditional Dance Festival has reached its grand finale.

This year's festival, hosted in partnership with the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe and the Zimbabwe National Traditional Dancers Association, has brought communities together in a shared celebration of traditional dance, culture and heritage," said Mirisawu.

The festival remains one of Zimbabwe's longest-running cultural events. Beyond the competition, it provides a platform for communities to preserve and celebrate the country's diverse traditional dances, nurture artistic talent and strengthen cultural identity across generations.
