Harare - The Douglas Mwonzora led Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) says it has officially reapplied for police clearance to conduct a nationwide peaceful demonstration scheduled for April 23, 2026, framing the move as a defense of Zimbabwe’s constitutional integrity.

The fresh application follows a period of engagement between the opposition party and the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).

A statement released by the MDC on Monday, April 13, the party says it has addressed specific concerns raised by authorities in a previous filing, bringing the current request in line with procedural requirements.

Terancy Mambende, the MDC Secretary for Information and Publicity, stated that the party is seeking to exercise rights enshrined in the supreme law of the country.

"The MDC remains firmly committed to upholding the Constitution of Zimbabwe, particularly the right to peaceful assembly and expression," Mambende said.

"This demonstration is grounded in the defence of constitutionalism and the collective desire of citizens to safeguard the integrity of our supreme law."

The planned protest comes at a time of heightened political discourse regarding the adherence to democratic principles and the protection of civil liberties.

The party expressed optimism that the authorities would respect the corrected application and allow the event to proceed without interference.

"We are optimistic that, having complied with all procedural requirements, the relevant authorities will respond in a fair and lawful manner that reflects respect for democratic principles," Mambende said.

The MDC has also issued a directive to its supporters to maintain order as the date of the proposed march approaches.

The leadership also said the efficacy of the demonstration relies on the discipline of its participants and their adherence to the law.

"The MDC calls upon all Zimbabweans to remain united, peaceful, and disciplined as we approach this important moment.

"The strength of our nation lies in the ability of its citizens to express themselves responsibly and within the confines of the law," the statement said.
