Harare- The Culture Fund of Zimbabwe Trust has joined the diplomatic and cultural communities in mourning the sudden death of the European Union (EU) Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Her Excellency Katrin Hagemann.
Ambassador Hagemann passed away unexpectedly in Harare on September 3, 2026, aged 53, less than nine months after assuming her post. The EU Delegation confirmed her passing in an official statement, requesting privacy for her family during this difficult time.
In a condolence message, the Board of Trustees and Secretariat of the Culture Fund extended their heartfelt sympathies to Ambassador Hagemann's family, loved ones, colleagues, and the broader EU diplomatic community.
The Culture Fund’s tribute highlights Hagemann’s strong engagement with Zimbabwe’s creative sector during her short tenure. Her time in office coincided with the implementation of the CreativeACTIONs 2 program—a 36-month initiative funded by a €2,060,500 commitment from the EU to bolster local creative and cultural industries.
Administered through the Culture Fund of Zimbabwe Trust, CreativeACTIONs 2 provides financial and institutional backing to artists and cultural organizations, fostering innovation, cross-cultural dialogue, and sector capacity across disciplines including music, dance, theater, literary arts, and fashion. Notably, an earlier round of the program awarded $748,588 across 42 projects nationwide.
Beyond policy and funding, Ambassador Hagemann was celebrated for her hands-on engagement with local traditions. Earlier this year, she made headlines during Europe Day celebrations when she took to the stage alongside musician Mary Anibal to play the mbira. The performance stood out as a powerful symbol of authentic cultural exchange, placing Zimbabwean heritage at the heart of a major diplomatic event.
Hagemann presented her credentials to President Emmerson Mnangagwa in December 2025. Despite her brief tenure, she actively advanced Zimbabwe-EU relations across economic development, governance, trade, and bilateral cooperation.
Tributes have poured in from across the political, diplomatic, and development sectors. Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Professor Amon Murwira signed the official Book of Condolences in Harare on Monday on behalf of the Government of Zimbabwe, alongside messages of sympathy from the United Nations family in Zimbabwe.
The EU Delegation announced that a public Book of Condolences will remain open from September 7 to 10, 2026, between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM at its Harare headquarters.
As Zimbabwe’s artistic community continues to rely on international partnerships to develop talent and sustain creative enterprises, Ambassador Hagemann’s passion for local arts leaves a lasting impact on the ongoing collaboration between the European Union and Zimbabwe's cultural sector.
