ZimPride 2026 Tournament Opens in Australia Celebrating Heritage and Youth Empowerment

Adelaide - The 2026 edition of ZimPride, the premier Zimbabwean cultural and sporting festival in Australia, was officially opened on Friday, April 3, with a focus on community cohesion and the empowerment of the next generation.  

The three-day tournament which is ending today, April 5,  brings together players, families and community leaders from across different Australian states to celebrate Zimbabwean heritage through the unifying medium of sport.

While football remains the central fixture of the event, organisers say the festival serves as a broader platform for cultural exchange and social interaction within the Australian community.  

“This tournament is not about a series of matches being played in football. It is who we are as Zimbabweans,” Zimbabwe Ambassador to Australia, Joe Tapera Mhishi said during the official opening ceremony, Friday. 

A significant component of the 2026 tournament is the exhibition of small business projects and innovative works by the Zimbabwean diaspora.

The displays of creativity and industrial application were highlighted as a reflection of "Education 5.0," the current cornerstone of Zimbabwe’s economic rebirth strategy.  

In addition to economic and cultural showcases, community elders reaffirmed their commitment to using the tournament as a tool for youth development.

By promoting participation in competitive team sports, Ambassador Mhishi said, the festival aims to build resilience and help young Zimbabweans connect with their cultural identity.  

“When youth participate in competitive team sports, that builds their confidence, it nurtures talent, and helps young people to connect with their identity, culture, and community,” he stated.  

The event is guided by a set of core values including unity, inclusion and cultural pride, with the Embassy of Zimbabwe in Canberra affirming that supporting the diaspora remains a critical mandate of its diplomatic leadership.
