Harare — The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched an investigation into a violent altercation and a firearm incident that marred a schoolboy rugby match between Eaglesvale College and Christian Brothers College (CBC) in Harare on Saturday, June 23.

The incident occurred during a highly contested match at Eaglesvale College, which ended with a narrow 14-13 victory in favour of the host school.

Eyewitnesses say ugly scenes erupted immediately after the final whistle when aggrieved individuals, suspected to be parents and supporters from the visiting Bulawayo-based school, stormed the field as the hosts celebrated.

The pitch invasion rapidly degenerated into violence as a disgruntled CBC parent allegedly assaulted an Eaglesvale player and an assistant referee.

Reports state that the referee was headbutted while the Eaglesvale player was struck with a punch during the melee.

Tension escalated further when a parent reportedly drew a firearm, sparking panic among onlookers, before being swiftly restrained by other spectators present at the venue.

Emerging accounts however clarify that while the individual was armed, the weapon was not actively pointed at anyone.

In an official statement released on Sunday, June 14, National Police Spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed that law enforcement agencies have taken up the matter.

"The ZRP confirms that investigations are currently underway in connection with a firearm incident and assault case which occurred at Eaglesvale College, Harare on 13th June 2026," said Commissioner Nyathi.

Police have called for calm from all parties involved while criminal investigations are being carried out to establish the exact sequence of events and hold the perpetrators accountable.

"The ZRP urges calm among parents, students, administrators and stakeholders as police investigations continue," Commissioner Nyathi said.
