TelOne FC Seek First Win As Scottland Visit Ascot Stadium In PSL Midweek Clash
TelOne FC coach Herbert Maruwa previews a tough home match against defending champions Scottland FC in Zimbabwe’s 2026 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League round five, with both sides eyeing vital points after contrasting starts to the season.
Gweru - TelOne FC hope to end a winless start to the 2026 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League (PSL) campaign when they host defending champions Scottland FC in round five of matches at Ascot Stadium in Gweru tomorrow, Thursday April 2.
The Wifi Boys sit near the bottom of the table with just two points from four matches, two draws and two defeats, and a goal difference of minus two after scoring three goals and conceding six.
Scottland, by contrast, have made a fairly impressive start to their title defence, sitting second with eight points, unbeaten after two wins and two draws, seven goals scored and only one conceded.
The two sides however have a closely contested recent history.
TelOne claimed a 1-0 victory away in June last season before Scottland won 2-1 at TelOne's home ground in November.
TelOne Coach Herbert Maruwa acknowledged the even nature of their encounters ahead of the latest meeting.
“Yes, it’s going to be a difficult game for us and even them. The last time we played in Harare we managed to get three points and they came here and managed to get three points. So we are on 50-50,” he told reporters at Tuesday ahead of the clash.
TelOne have struggled at home this season having lost twice, which Maruwa is determined to address.
“Now we need to make sure we try and rectify our shortcomings, especially at home and get the maximum points,” he said.
The coach highlighted his side’s attacking output while stressing the need for defensive improvement
“In terms of maybe going forward, we have been scoring since game one, we only failed to score against Simba (Simba Bhora FC).
"The other three games we managed to score. So what we are looking for is now a clean sheet and we’ll see what will happen," Maruwa said.
Despite the position, Maruwa insisted TelOne remain firmly in the mix given the congested mid-table.
“We are still in it, drawing two and losing two. You can see maybe the teams which are near the last, maybe just a point, two points, three points, up to top ten in the league. So we are still in it,” he said.
He said team captain, Frank Makarati is still out with an injury.
Maruwa called for collective discipline.
"We need to make sure we don’t give them room to play and make sure we defend well. We play as a team and we close maybe the spaces they will be trying to create.” He said.
Scottland, under coach Norman Mapeza, travel to Gweru aiming to maintain their strong form and put further pressure on table-toppers CAPS United.
