Harare Carjacking Syndicate Busted After Crash, Lost Phone Leads Police to Suspects
Four suspects, including an 18 year old, have been arrested over a series of carjackings in Harare targeting motorists in Kuwadzana, Mabelreign and surrounding areas.

Harare — A-four-men carjacking sydicate, which includes an 18-year-old, has been busted and arraigned before a Harare Magistrate facing six alleged cases of carjacking and vehicle theft following investigations by the Zimbabwe Republic Police.
The suspects have been identified as Terence Wachenuka (19), Onsimo Nyasha Kusekera (20), Blessing Rugwinya (26) and Joshua Mutungamiri Chirata (18).
They appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Court on Monday, August 31, 2026, and have been remanded in custody.
Police said investigations followed a road traffic accident along Lake Chivero Road in Whitecliff, where a Toyota Raum suspected to have been stolen was involved in a crash.
Police said one of the suspects allegedly fled from the scene, leaving behind a cellphone which investigators later used as part of their inquiries.
Detectives subsequently arrested Wachenuka, who allegedly implicated his accomplices during investigations.
“Follow-up investigations were conducted, leading to the arrest of Terence Wachenuka.
"He admitted to having participated in the commission of the crimes together with his accomplices, who were subsequently arrested,” Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Provincial Community Relations Liaison Office, Detective Inspector Rachel Muteweri said.
She said the suspects were being investigated in connection with six cases of carjacking and one case of motor vehicle theft.
Police have since urged motorists to exercise caution when offering lifts to strangers.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police continue to warn motorists against offering lifts to strangers. Your vigilance can prevent crime,” said Detective Inspector Muteweri.
