Fourteen Year-Old Sentenced for Police Station Car Theft
A 14-year-old Bulawayo learner has been jailed for three years after a string of vehicle thefts, including stealing an officer’s car from a police station and driving it for a week before abandoning it.
Bulawayo - A 14-year-old high school learner from Bulawayo has been sentenced to three years in prison after a series of vehicle thefts, including an officer’s car from a police station and driving it around the city for about a week.
The juvenile, whose identity is protected by law, appeared before Bulawayo Regional Magistrate, Patience Ururu, and admitted to multiple counts of vehicle theft committed over several weeks.
The court heard that the teenager repeatedly targeted Honda Fit vehicles across different suburbs in Bulawayo.
Prosecutor, Concilia Ncube, told the court that the first incident occurred on 26 April 2026, when a grey Honda Fit was stolen from a car park in Entumbane.
Three days later, another Honda Fit was reportedly stolen from Nkulumane and later abandoned after it ran out of fuel.
The following day, yet another Honda Fit went missing in Emakhandeni.
Although the accused faced four counts, he was convicted on three after the court ruled that one of the charges was not sufficiently proven.
In the most unusual case, the court heard that on 12 May 2026, the teenager allegedly entered Entumbane Police Station and stole a Honda Fit belonging to a police officer.
He reportedly drove the vehicle around Bulawayo for several days before abandoning it, prompting a Vehicle Theft Squad investigation.
Detectives later tracked down and arrested the teen after linking him to the series of incidents.
In delivering judgment, Magistrate Ururu said the boy’s actions were serious and alarming despite his young age.
“You are very young but your actions defy your age,” she said.
The magistrate noted that the teenager continued offending, even after being released into the care of his parents following an earlier arrest.
“When you were released to your parents after you were initially arrested, you went on to steal again,” she said.
While acknowledging his background, including references to a broken family, the court ruled that this did not justify his conduct.
“You will be sent to prison so that you reform,” the Magistrate added.
The teenager was sentenced to three years at Whawha Juvenile Prison just outside Gweru.
