Kwekwe — Two miners have died after a section of an underground shaft collapsed at Vigilant Resources Mine in Kwekwe on Tuesday evening, trapping them beneath falling soil while three colleagues escaped unharmed.

In a statement, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) Midlands Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, said the fatal accident occurred at Vigilant Mine on July 7 at around 7pm.

The victims were identified as Busani Nyathi and Proud Maphosa, both adult males.

Inspector Mahoko said the two men were working underground with three other miners when the accident occurred.

"It is said the two were working underground with three others. When they were at a depth of about 200 metres, a block of soil collapsed from the roof of the shaft, covering the miners.

"Three of them safely exited the shaft and the now deceased men remained," he said.

Police attended the scene and later retrieved the bodies from the mine.

Following the tragedy, Inspector Mahoko urged mining operators and workers to prioritise safety in their operations.

"We remind all persons who do mining business to follow all safety guidelines provided under the Mines and Minerals Act, Chapter 21:05," he said.
