Lower Gweru – Amidst the jubilant atmosphere of Honourable Brown Ndlovu’s recent victory celebration in the Vungu Constituency, an unexpected star emerged from the smallest of stages, captivating hundreds with a performance that transcended political fanfare.
A pre-school prodigy, Andrew Marazanye, barely seven years old, delivered a performance poem so powerful and poignant that it left seasoned performers and distinguished guests alike in stunned admiration.
The event, intended to honor Member of Parliament Brown Ndlovu’s election, took a dramatic turn when the pint-sized orator stepped up to the microphone. With an unnerving poise for his age, he clutched the instrument as if it were a conduit for the profound messages surging within him. What followed was not a simple recitation, but an electrifying display of rhythmic fire that commanded the attention of every soul present.
Andrew’s poem was a masterful, compact exploration of complex themes, including unity, underdevelopment, leadership, and the quest for hope. With exquisite craftsmanship, he wove together vivid imagery, strategic repetition, and alliterative flair.
His performance was equally impressive, as he effortlessly shifted between soft, melodic tones and powerful, soaring crescendos. Employing classic techniques, he used deliberate pauses, direct eye contact, and nuanced vocal inflections to convey the emotional depth of his words, forging a profound connection with his audience.
“This is beyond mere recitation,” marveled a local primary school teacher, his voice tinged with awe. “This is performance poetry in its purest, most nascent form. His enjambment and internal rhyme schemes were simply flawless. He is an undeniable natural.”
The impact on the assembled crowd, numbering in the hundreds, was immediate and profound. Roars of cheers and spirited ululations filled the air. Some attendees stood precariously on chairs, desperate for a clearer view of the diminutive dynamo.
The audience found themselves clapping in unison, their rhythms mirroring the potent beat of his spoken verse. At one unforgettable juncture, the crowd erupted into a spontaneous call-and-response, echoing his final stanza like a thunderous chorus—a testament to the shared emotional call for meaningful development his words had evoked.
Even the guest of honor, ZANU-PF Midlands Province Youth League Chairman Cde Ernest Dzoro, was visibly moved by the young poet's performance.
"This child," he stated, his voice resonating with emotion, "truly represents the future of our children towards Vision 2030. His words, delivered with such conviction and clarity, carried immense weight and resonance.
“Through his powerful poem, he advocated for the fixing of the road, hence I was touched and triggered to take action. I am going to donate one thousand liters towards road rehabilitation. Had it not been for this child, I would not have known about it. These are the future youth we want,” he affirmed.
The talent was first identified by his mother, Maria Gumha, who says Andrew used to do poetry at school.
The impact of his performance has already rippled through the local arts community. Local arts groups, including members of the prominent High Voltage Poets ensemble, have swiftly expressed their keen interest in mentoring this budding talent. Discussions are reportedly underway to feature him in upcoming community showcases and explore opportunities for him to attend a junior poetry academy.
Beyond the immediate artistic acclaim, the young poet’s performance has ignited crucial conversations across Lower Gweru regarding the vital importance of early childhood arts education and the powerful role poetry can play in civic engagement. As one elder aptly observed, "He didn't just perform; he prophesied."
The poem's content, beyond its poetic prowess, carried a powerful social commentary. While celebrating political success, the young orator fearlessly articulated the stark realities faced by his community. His verse artfully questioned the pervasive underdevelopment plaguing the Lower Gweru area, highlighting impassable roads, a critical lack of clean water, inadequate sanitation facilities, and a litany of other pressing challenges.
In a celebration designed to commemorate a political victory, it was poetry that emerged as the true victor. And in the smallest of voices, the community of Lower Gweru heard its loudest, clearest call for hope, unity, and a future fueled by boundless imagination. The microphone may have dwarfed his diminutive hand, but his words, imbued with both artistic brilliance and raw truth, far surpassed the moment, leaving an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to witness his extraordinary talent.
