Gweru – A devastating fire tore through the DST informal market in Gweru this morning, reducing dozens of business structures to ashes and destroying property worth thousands of dollars.
The blaze reportedly ignited around 11:00 AM and quickly spread through highly flammable foam rubber materials located near welding workshops.
Eyewitnesses described the fire as “unstoppable,” fueled by the combustible nature of the market’s makeshift structures.
“It started so fast. Within minutes, the whole place was engulfed,” said one vendor who watched helplessly as the flames consumed his stall.
Despite the swift response from the Gweru Fire Brigade, the inferno had already engulfed most of the market by the time firefighters arrived.
No injuries or fatalities were reported, but the financial toll on traders has been catastrophic.
“All my stock was destroyed. I don’t even know where to begin,” lamented one equipment owner, visibly shaken by the loss.
Several traders attempted to salvage their goods, but were overwhelmed by thick smoke and intense heat.
Many lost everything they had invested in their businesses.
Patrick Dawana, of Baye Furnishers, expressed deep frustration over the incident.
“Our entire storeroom filled with brand-new furniture was burnt to the ground. We lost goods worth over US$30,000,” he said. “What’s worse is that most of us took out loans to grow our businesses.
Now we’re back to zero, and the lenders still expect their money. They won’t accept excuses,”
Dawana added appealing for help to the government and well-wishers,
It is our appeal to the government to help us rebuild. Even a small grant or donation can make a huge difference. We are not asking for luxuries, just a chance to start again,” Dawana added.
Nigel Mugadziwa, who specializes in generator repairs, said he lost several machines that had been brought in by clients for servicing.
“I had both small and heavy-duty generators in my workshop. They’re all gone.
"I just hope my clients will understand—it’s heartbreaking,” he said.
Traders are now appealing to the government and local authorities for urgent assistance to rebuild their livelihoods.
