Harare - Zimbabwe's national football team coach Marian Marinica named a 26-man squad on Friday laced with European experience and youthful promise, but tempered by key absences, as the Warriors steel themselves for a formidable Group B challenge at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
The selection, revealed amid a swirl of injury controversies and fan debates, fuses Luton Town midfielder Marvelous Nakamba's midfield mastery with 16-year-old Scottland FC prodigy Tadiwanashe Chakuchichi's raw potential, reflecting Marinica's blueprint for "fast and very fast" football to counter the tournament's elite pace.
Entering their seventh AFCON appearance, and first since a quarter-final exit in 2019, Zimbabwe carry the weight of a nation craving a maiden semi-final berth, with the finals running from December 21 to January 18 across different Moroccan venues.
"No one has earned their ticket yet, expect surprises," Marinica told reporters in Harare, pointing to the provisional-to-final cull that trimmed a 51-man camp to 26 after recent friendlies against Algeria and Qatar.
"We've built depth for resilience. Speed in transition will be our weapon against stronger sides," Marinica said.
The Romanian tactician, appointed in November on a 12-month deal, has instilled a high-pressing ethos during qualifiers, where Zimbabwe scraped through with gritty wins over Lesotho and Namibia.
The spine draws from the 2019 bronze medallists' core, bolstered by returnees.
Veteran goalkeeper Washington Arubi (40) and with Marumo Gallants, leads a trio including Magesi FC's Elvis Chipezeze and MWOS FC's Martin Mapisa between the posts.
Defence boasts a cosmopolitan edge with FC Cincinnati's Teenage Hadebe anchoring alongside Mamelodi Sundowns' Divine Lunga, Plymouth Argyle's Brendan Galloway and FC Copenhagen's Munashe Garananga, with local stalwarts like Dynamos FC's Emmanuel Jalai and Scottland FC's Godknows Murwira providing grit.
Nakamba, the new captain and linchpin with 50 caps, partners Reading FC's Andy Rinomhota and FC Erzgebirge Aue's Jonah Fabisch in midfield, where Sheffield Wednesday's Sean Fusire adds youthful bite.
Scottland FC's Knowledge Musona (35) and a 38-goal international, bridges to attack as a false nine option, his experience vital in a squad averaging 27 years.
Forward firepower hinges on Young Africans' Prince Dube, KV Mechelen's Bill Antonio and Motherwell's Tawanda Maswanhise, with CAPS United's Ishmael Wadi and Marumo Gallants' Daniel Msendami offering domestic nous.
Cambridge United loanee Tawanda Chirewa and SJK Seinäjoki's Prosper Padera inject dynamism, while Chakuchichi, a Scottland FC sensation who debuted at 15, embodies the generational shift, his blistering pace earmarked for bench impact.

Warriors Vice-captain, Marshall Munetsi, the Stade de Reims powerhouse, however sits out with a calf injury, his six-week layoff confirmed by Wolverhampton Wanderers despite the player's push for inclusion.
"I'm hurt by the lack of clarity, but I'll back the boys 100 percent," Munetsi said in a statement, echoing frustrations over ZIFA's handling.
Jordan Zemura (Udinese) and Walter Musona (Simba SC) also miss out to thigh and unspecified knocks, while ex-Kaizer Chiefs forward Khama Billiat was overlooked for form reasons, a snub also sparking online uproar.
Pitted in Group B with hosts Morocco's conquerors Egypt, which will be the opener on December 22 in Agadir, South Africa and Angola, Zimbabwe face a gauntlet where progression demands upsets.
Their last AFCON win was a 2-1 thriller over Uganda in 2019, recent qualifiers yielded four victories in six, but a 1-0 loss to Cameroon exposed frailties.
November friendlies, a 2-2 draw with Algeria and 1-0 Qatar win, signal progress under Marinica's 4-2-3-1 setup, prioritising counter-attacks over possession.
For Nakamba, the stakes evoke redemption.
"We've grown since Egypt 2019. This group's tough, but our unity can shock," the 31-year-old said post-announcement.
Marinica, drawing on his Romanian league pedigree, tempers optimism.
"Egypt are favourites, but we've nothing to lose. Fight smart, run hard, that's our code," he said.
