Gweru, Zimbabwe - Laxon Dhegwa, a dedicated teacher and visionary founder of Progress Christian College in Gweru, has died following a brief illness, family members confirmed on Saturday.

He was 62.

Born in 1963 in Buhera Chitsunge, Dhegwa spent decades in education, teaching at schools in Mberengwa, Lower Gweru and Matinunura High School in Mkoba-Gweru, until his retirement in 2007.

Driven by a commitment to combining rigorous academics with Christian values, he established Progress Christian College in the mid-2000s, starting as a day school in Mkoba 14 before expanding it into a full primary and secondary institution with boarding facilities.

As Director, Principal and Chaplain, Dhegwa guided the interdenominational school toward a reputation for discipline, holistic student development and excellence.

The college, situated about seven kilometers from Gweru along Shurugwi road, currently offers ZIMSEC and Cambridge curricula, small class sizes, modern facilities including a library and computer lab and a wide range of extracurricular activities such as sports and clubs.

Dhegwa focused on empowering students to realize their potential through Christ-centered education, resilience-building and preparation for leadership in a changing world.

Speaking to a Gweru-based local community publication, his brother, Forbes, acting as family spokesperson, announced the passing.

Mourners are assembling at the family residence in Lingfield, with funeral details to be released in due course.

Dhegwa leaves behind his wife, Mucha, three children and four grandchildren.
