Healthcare professionals are reminding patients that following medical advice is an important part of managing illness, preventing complications and improving overall health.

Medical advice adherence refers to the extent to which patients follow agreed recommendations from healthcare professionals, including taking prescribed medication, attending appointments, following dietary or lifestyle recommendations and completing recommended treatments.

When patients follow their treatment plans correctly, medications and other interventions have a better opportunity to achieve their intended effects.

In conditions requiring long-term treatment, such as HIV, hypertension, diabetes and tuberculosis, consistent adherence can be particularly important. Failure to follow medical advice may result from several factors.

Patients may forget doses, experience medication side effects, have difficulty accessing healthcare services, misunderstand instructions or struggle with the financial and practical demands of treatment.

Psychological factors can also influence adherence. Fear, anxiety, depression, stigma, treatment fatigue and a lack of social support may make it more difficult for some patients to maintain their treatment routines.

Healthcare workers play an important role in improving adherence. Patients are more likely to follow treatment recommendations when they understand their condition and know why a particular treatment has been prescribed.

Clear communication can help patients understand when and how to take medication, possible side effects, the importance of follow-up appointments and what to do if they miss a dose.

Medical advice adherence should not be viewed simply as a patient’s responsibility. Healthcare systems and professionals also have a role to play by providing understandable information, respectful services, accessible treatment and opportunities for patients to discuss concerns.

A patient who is struggling to follow treatment should be encouraged to seek help rather than being blamed. Understanding why adherence is difficult can allow healthcare workers and patients to identify solutions together.

Following medical advice is an important component of effective healthcare, but successful adherence depends on more than simply telling patients what to do. It requires education, communication, trust, psychological support and collaboration between patients and healthcare professionals.

Patients should also feel comfortable asking questions. Rather than remaining silent because they are afraid of being judged, they should tell healthcare professionals when they are experiencing difficulties with their treatment.
