GWERU - The government is set to construct a new secondary school at Whawha Prison, the only juvenile prison in Zimbabwe.

The Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution in Midlands, Owen Ncube, presided over the groundbreaking ceremony, which was attended by government representatives, community leaders, and prison officials.

"Rehabilitation without education is incomplete," Minister Ncube said. "This school embodies our vision of fostering a culture of learning and empowerment, ensuring that no community is left behind."

He also thanked partners and sponsors for supporting the initiative, which is part of the government's efforts to promote inclusive and equitable education.

The school is expected to provide education to inmates and children of prison officers, as well as members of the surrounding community.

Commissioner General Somegate, Officer-in-Charge of Whawha Prison Complex, said the school would provide inmates with skills necessary to drive economic growth and development.

"By establishing this school, we are investing in generations to come," Commissioner General Somegate said. "It is a beacon of hope."

Inmate Sylvester Chaurunga thanked the government for the initiative, saying it would help to reduce stigma and strengthen community ties.

The construction of the school is part of the government's efforts to transform the country's correctional services, in line with its vision 2030.

Minister Ncube also highlighted the importance of the school in promoting economic growth and development.

"This initiative is part of our efforts to drive economic growth and development, through innovation, industrialisation, and modernisation," he said.

The government has provided foodstuffs and blankets to the prison, as part of its efforts to support the rehabilitation of inmates.
